"An inheritance gained hurriedly at the beginning will not be blessed in the end." Proverbs 20: 21 NASB
I'm currently taking a class that should be called Soap Opera For Lawyers. Instead, it's called Wills and Trusts. You would be amazed at how many families fight about wills and inheritances. In fact, you'd be shocked about the amounts of money people fight over. It's understandable that family members might take on probate fights over million dollar estates, but it's ridiculous how many people will fight over thousands of dollars. Don't get me wrong, that's a lot of money. But the headache, family conflict, and disrespect for the testator (the person who died) just isn't worth it in my opinion.
Proverbs reminds us that inheritances and quick money are often problematic for the person who gets the money. It's like the curse of the lottery. When we don't have an incentive to work, we make bad choices and often act like fools. Some very wise people have figured out this concept and have actually created ways for people to shield their children from getting large, fast inheritances upon the parent's death. If you have a lot of money, it's probably good to talk to an estate lawyer to implement some of these wise measures.
Regardless of our financial status, this verse inspires us to be patient, to work hard, and to realize that money earned by hard work is better than easy money. Proverbs 28: 20 promises that "a faithful man will abound with blessings, but he who makes haste to be rich will not go unpunished." So what's the bottom line? Stop dreaming about the lottery and get to work!
